Reina Cottier

Born & raised Aotearoa/New Zealand.
Mother of 2 awesome girls who keep her real in every way….

Rediscovered her passion for creating beautiful shapes and colours after having kids which opened up a whole new side of her, (which she didn’t think possible for a multifaceted Gemini!), so she decided to experiment with painting, a media she hadn’t explored in-depth (She did art all through school, winning many awards but gave it up for a career in hairdressing.) Reina discovered that she can’t plan or think when while creating, it just flows and what it will be… will be. Her work is heavily influenced by sun, surf, nature, culture & all things vibrant.

Can you tell us about your dream and what inspired you to go for it?

My dream was to be a full-time professional artist, making a comfortable living off my creations and merchandise. To make my ‘play’ my ‘work’ and to enjoy & embrace everyday fully. What inspired me to go for it? Other full-time artists making a living, and watching artists paint subject matter that interested me. And I have always been highly self motivated, I know what I want and how to get there. I have been self-employed for 20 years (had a 5 year break when I had children), so I knew what I had to do to make it work, I knew I just couldn’t sit and paint all day and wait to be discovered.

What sort of challenges do you face and how do you get around them?

Being a full-time mother, running a household, and a full-time artist in demand, is difficult. I sell all over the world, all online. I am based in New Zealand, so when someone in Australia wants to talk to me about a painting, it can be 11pm at night here. I try to paint when the kids are at school so I am uninterrupted, and I am online updating my sites after school and at night, and talking/interacting with people who are interested in my art. I have good support, my partner is amazing and will always step up and go the extra mile when I’m flat-out (which is most of the time lol!). My kids are pretty good too, they know I’m always doing something that involves my art and they don’t mind 🙂

What do you love to do the most?

Paint! 🙂 create designs, and get them onto a canvas as fast as I can. Then I like to use those designs to create other things, maybe merchandise, maybe some Wordart, I like to play around and see what I can do with it.

Who supports you in following your dream?

All my family & friends, but my rock is my wonderful life partner Jerry. He is amazing. Always encouraging at every turn, always helping with the kids & the house. Cooking, cleaning, running errands, fetching the kids… I couldn’t do it without him.

Who inspires you?

People who are living their passion, who are authentic and have stepped onto their true path, often against all odds. I’m always drawn to that courage, that strength. My friends are amazing too, always inspired by their drive & passion.

Where do you see yourself in five years?

More of the same except bigger, better, more efficient (perhaps with an assistant), lots of licensed designs, prints other merchandise in place to tick over, as I enjoy what I do best, painting, creating. 🙂

What is the biggest tip you have for anyone looking to following their dreams?

Be focused on that goal and believe in yourself. Dont worry/fixate about one person who may criticize, go and find all the others who appreciate – that’s where your future is.

If you or someone you know, is reaching for the stars (big or small) and loving it, I would be honored to have them featured here!  Please note, this is not reserved for artists only, dreams come in all shapes and sizes. Whether it be crafting, doing yoga, chasing kids, coupon clipping, or playing golf. If it’s a dream and someone is trying to get their hands on it, I want to hear from them!
